Using joikuspot with Vodafone (PT)

Since I got back home I've been trying to use the same paraphernalia I was using in the UK for my mobile communication solution (combo iPod Touch 2G + Nokia E51 + joikuspot*).

Usualy starting joikuspot with the main 3G APN was enough to get the hotspot working (that was the case when I was using 3.UK and O2.UK) but here with Vodafone Portugal it wasn't as easy.

Vodafone uses a proxy between the 3G-device and the Internet so having it configured on your Phone is not enough: you need to get your "tethered" device to use that proxy as well. In the screenshot you'll find Vodafone.PT's proxy and it's port. Set it up after connecting the iPod/laptop/ etc to the joikuspot connection.

* For those who never heard of joikuspot, it is a Symbian S60 app that turns your wifi-enabled S60 phone (mostly nokia smartphone but also samsung i8510) into a walking hotspot. When I connect my iPod Touch to that I basically get a iPhone - albeit sans camera and sans GPS (but with GSM positioning) but most importantly, sans overly expensive contract).

  • Ive: My drawing skills are terrible... and I'm a lousy presenter. So I focus on designing instead. :)
  • Ive: We don't do focus groups. They just ensure that you don't offend anyone.

  • Ive: When you do everything to make the very best product, it also means your very focused on just a few products.

  • Ive: Prototypes create this dramatic shift in the conversation - suddenly it becomes tangible and the silence goes away.

  • Ive: I love making prototypes. We go right from idea to prototypes. I just love making objects.

  • Ive: I can't imagine designing without making. (Talking about building physical products)

  • I can really relate to his first statement. Although I do try hard to keep my presentation standards high.

iPod Touch 2G firmware 3.0 free?

Mistake or intentional? Apple is distributing firmware 3.0 for free to be used with restore feature in iTunes. And unlike the 2.0 update the cool new features are unlocked even if you don't pay.

Wonder when/if Apple is coming after my €9,97.

Download firmware from here. Then in iTunes and with iPod plugged in hold SHIFT key and click RESTORE in the iPod tab in iTunes then select the firmware file you just downloaded. It will take a few minutes plus, at the end you'll have to resync to have all your content restored (my 8GB iPod took 1-2 hours to restore completely). You'll keep your notes and most (if not all) settings.
