Design for Life episode 2 & 3

the first episode was far from rich in insights or quality of work but for some reason I was expecting a growing interestingness in this show... after episode 3 I can confidently say: I am disappointed.

Why my mind created such high exceptions on a "reality" show is beyond me. Nevertheless, you can can always watch the show for the entertaining value of it: it's like watching The Office, full of embarrassing moments, both from the applicants and Stark.

"you feel that you've a lot to prove and you haven't even got to design anything yet" - James Malcolm-Green @ Design for Life (BBC)

I would say to this that unless you have the right ideas in your head going on to "design" things would've been dangerous and counterproductive.

Electricity-free automatic door prototype

via Core77 on 6/23/09

This is a concept for a neat, electricity-free automatic door system that uses mechanical energy provided by your footfalls. It's still in the concept stages so the door material is soft, but perhaps with a little nanotech this will become feasible in future.

The first 00:56 of this video shows how the mechanism works; fast forward to 00:57 if you just want to see the door in action.

We like the little "ssshk" sound effect that's a by-product of the mechanics.

The concept is by UK-based design student Wai Man Cheung. You can peep his other stuff on Coroflot.
